Utetezi wa mama
“Utetezi wa mama” in Kiswahili means “The defense of a mother”. The landscape was not my favorite genre until now. The moment and the action it represents, however, pushed me to depict for the first time an environment that I love very much: the savannah.
Its red earth, a vegetation that is at times arid and at times rich in life and colors, an immense sky that varies in shapes and colors in a few minutes, is the setting for a gesture of love. During a safari, immersed in the beauty of the landscape, we passed very calmly far enough away from this elephant mother and her cub. We never understood why she suddenly felt somehow attacked and in danger. Her reaction surprised us and apologizing with useless words but with affection and sincerity, we ran away accelerating the pace.
Incredible her agility, her speed, but not incredible her love for her son that led her to defend him with all her strength. A rush and a trumpeting entered my head and heart forever. “Sorry mom, sorry if I gave you a way to worry, it was not our intention. The respect I have for you and your environment goes far beyond my words. This is why I dedicate this painting to you, to let people know how much we are guests and how much we are intruders in an environment that explains it as paradise is incredibly reductive.”
